Every movie, every novel, every PLAY that deals with love! It's in every genre, every format. There are too many sources to name just one. Too many stories that tell of a life-changing love!

Anything can change one person's life. That kind of love never put a fascist out of power or gave an oppressed group better rights.

Well, no. But you can still have both! And love changes your life in the moment! It makes all of the bad things so much more bearable. It makes anything possible! You could have all the rights in the world, and still be unhappy.

In my experience it's hard work and dedication make anything possible.

Haven't you ever seen someone so utterly, profoundly in love that they would do absolutely anything for that other person? And I mean even die for them!

[abaisse]

And what a waste that would be. What good ever came of someone dying for another person? Dying for a cause, for an ideal: those are what might change the world.

Moreover: Why would I want to be so in love with someone that I couldn't do anything useful for the world? If you're wasting your life already, sure. Another person might give you a reason to live but I've already found mine.

[justtolove]

A life of love is never a waste! Besides, unless you're famous, when you die for an ideal, no one remembers you.

And look at what those people accomplished.

But what of all the non-famous people who die for their causes? They don't leave a mark! At least if you love someone before you die, then that's something to leave behind!

[abaisse]

What are they leaving behind? Dying for someone you love leaves behind one person with a dead lover.


[and to be fair that single person could probably now get their life in order and do something useful but Enjolras has picked up that Not Having The Person You Love makes people sad.]

But then they carry you in their heart and can take up your work! They have a REASON to!

That seems an extremely shallow reason to pick up a cause.

There is nothing shallow about love! How can picking up someone else's cause be SHALLOW?!

[abaisse]

People should be motivated by their own beliefs, not those of others.

[justtolove]

But....
By that logic, if you convince people to join your cause when they didn't believe in it before, isn't that shallow, too?

[abaisse]

They aren't motivated by some mystical emotion that compells them to do anything their beloved does.

[justtolove]

But the passion and inspiration you ask of people is an emotion, too! One that eludes people every day! Isn't that also mystical? A fire in the heart that drives one to glorious action is not so different from the passion of love!

The key difference being that it's used for something productive and helpful.

[justtolove]

Love is the most helpful thing in the world!

[abaisse]

Tell that to the Trojans.

That wasn't about love. Sure, Helen was the most beautiful woman in the world. People wanted to possess her! That's nothing like love. Love goes so much deeper than that! Love means you would do anything to see them happy, even if it means not being with them!

[abaisse]

The fundamental thing you're missing is that I don't want to care about one other single person to the exclusion of all others. I have a purpose and I'm content to see it realised.

You can still love someone and care about other things. It's not an exclusion of anything. But I don't think you're quite ready for love. Small steps. Maybe you need to start with that whole "fun" thing we were talking about.
